AI agent vs chatbot on WhatsApp: what changes
A chatbot follows the path you drew. An AI agent reads what the customer actually wrote. Where each one wins on WhatsApp, side by side, with the limits of both.

Building the platform this article is about

A customer writes: “order kab aayega, aur size bhi badalna hai.” Two questions in one line, in Hinglish, with no order number.
A chatbot looks for a keyword it was told to expect. If “order” starts the order-status path, it asks for the order number and answers the first question. The size change is lost unless someone drew a path for it too.
An AI agent reads the whole message. It sees two requests, replies in the same Hinglish, answers what it can, and passes the part it cannot do to a person. That is the real difference, and also the real limit.
Side by side
| Chatbot flow | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| How it decides | Keywords, buttons and the paths you drew | Reads the message and your knowledge |
| Two questions in one message | Answers the path it matched | Sees both, answers what it can |
| Language | The words you wrote in the flow | Matches the customer’s language and script, Hinglish included |
| Actions | Steps you add: order status, payment link, booking, reschedule | Tools you allow: find a lead, add a note, tag, send a template, show products |
| When it is unsure | There is no “unsure”; it follows the path | Hands the chat to your team |
| Predictability | Exactly the same every time | Same knowledge, wording varies |
| Cost | Your plan’s automated messages | Per AI reply, on top of the WhatsApp message |
Both run in Ohanvi on the same contact record. A flow can call an agent as one of its steps.
What the agent will not do
It does not invent prices, stock or policies. Its instructions on WhatsApp say so in as many words: look it up or say a person will confirm.
It cannot change an order. Its tools are for leads, contacts, notes, tasks, tags, templates and showing products. So in the example above, the size change goes to your team, with the conversation and the agent’s draft in front of them.
Where a chatbot is still better
Anything with a fixed path and a right answer: tracking an order from its number, sending a payment link for a cash-on-delivery order, booking or moving an appointment into a free slot. Those are flow steps in Ohanvi, and they do the same thing every time, which is what you want when money or a booking is involved.
Use both
The useful set-up is not either-or. Let flows handle the known paths with buttons, and let the agent take the free-text questions those paths do not cover, with a clear hand-off to a person behind both.

Questions this answers
- What is the difference between a WhatsApp chatbot and an AI agent?
- A chatbot follows paths you draw, triggered by keywords and buttons. An AI agent reads the customer’s message, answers from your knowledge in the customer’s language, uses the tools you allow, and hands the chat to a person when it is unsure.
- Can a WhatsApp AI agent change an order?
- Not in Ohanvi. The agent can find leads and contacts, add notes, tasks and tags, send templates and show products. Order changes go to your team; order status, payment links and appointment changes are chatbot-flow steps.
